Katie Adams is full-time working mom, wife and writer who lives in Libertyville with her husband Rich and three-year-old son Buel. She writes about her constant journey to strive for better work/life balance and shares her family adventures on her blog, Live Half Full.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in town? What brought you to the area?

I am originally from a Detroit suburb called Northville, which is very similar to Libertyville. Our high school colors were even Orange and Black!  I met my husband, Rich, who is a Libertyville native when I was living in Chicago after college. Eventually he convinced me to move to the suburbs in 2011 and I’ve enjoyed it ever since!

Do you have child(ren)? Age(s)

Yes, I have a three-year-old son named Buel.

What are your favorite things to do in the area with and without your kids? Family friendly restaurant? Date night?

This is why we love Libertyville, there are so many good places to eat and explore! We also enjoy all the local events for families throughout the year.

We love the abundance of parks in the areas and Independence Grove is our favorite. We appreciate that we can bike there on the trails by our house and love their summer concerts.  We also love the library and Liberty Theatre for indoor fun. We love picking up produce from Radical Root Farm and buying local coffee from Tala Coffee Roasters.

We typically do family breakfast on Sunday mornings after Church and my son’s choice is always Bagels by the Book. However, we recently tried the new Lazy Dog restaurant and loved it! For date night we always like to check out the newest place in town since it’s hard to get to the city and I miss it. We enjoyed Chrissoulas most recently!

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor or in the corporate world? Please share!

I work full-time as a Supervisor in the Partner and Product Management department at CDW and absolutely love it. Their focus on family is second to none.

As a creative outlet, I write a personal blog called Live Half Full. I started my blog to hold myself accountable to my donors when I ran the Chicago Marathon for charity in memory of my Mom in 2011. Since then, my life has gone through many seasons and my blog’s focus shifted to focus on working motherhood. I hope to inspire other moms to make the best of every day, even when time is limited. There are not many mom bloggers who work in corporate America and stick with it, and I want to remain a resource.

Finally, I also write freelance for Chicago Parent and The Everymom. These are fun side-gigs for me and help keep my creative juices flowing.

Where do you draw support from?

My husband and I are true co-parents. As two working parents, it takes a lot of effort, but we do approach parenting as a 50/50 effort. I also lucked out with friendships and have a super solid support system both personally and professionally.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten from another Mom?

To not care about what other’s think and do what’s best for your family. As moms it can be tough, especially with social media, to compare ourselves to others. I learned early on to go with my gut and to not worry too much about what others are doing.

What is next for you?

I’ve spend the past three years focused on being the best version of myself. I hope to continue to share this journey on my blog and bring the benefits to my family, my friends and my coworkers while hopefully inspiring others to do the same!
