March Programs and Events at the Vernon Hills Park District

You’re My Superhero Boys, 3-11 years, are welcome to dress as their favorite superhero at this event for boys and their favorite role model on Friday, March 10 from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Sullivan Community Center. Boys can bring their mom, aunt, grandmother or other significant figure who is at least 18 years old. There will be music, dancing games and ice cream to end the night. Pre-registration required. R/NR Couple $20/25, Additional Child R/NR $10/12.

 

Kids’ Castle Dragon Egg Hunt Dragon eggs have been spread all over Kid’s Castle in Deerpath Park! Boys and girls, 8-12 years, should bring their flashlights to this evening hunt on Friday, March 31 at 7 pm to help us find the eggs. This event will be canceled in the case of inclement weather. Pre-registration required. R/NR $3/4

Deerpath Egg Dash Children, 1-8 years, are welcome to hop on over to Kids’ Castle in Deerpath Park for our Annual Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 1 at 9 am! Find eggs spread all over the playground and enjoy live music and face painting. Golden eggs are worth a special prize! This event will be canceled in the case of inclement weather. Pre-registration required R/NR $5/7.

Doggie Egg Hunt Bring your furry friend to our Doggie Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 1 at 9 am near Kids’ Castle in Deerpath Park! Eggs will be filled with delicious dog treats. Dogs must be leashed at all times. Please register each dog attending. This event will be canceled in the case of inclement weather. R/NR $3/4

NBA Jr. Skills Challenge | Free! The Jr. NBA Skills Challenge provides boys and girls the opportunity to improve upon and showcase their fitness through five fundamental basketball skills: shooting, lay-ups, dribbling, passing, and defense. The program is free for all participants and organizations on Wednesday, March 15 from 4-6:30 pm at the Sullivan Community Center. Boys and girls compete separately in two different age groups: 11U and 13U. Participants compete in up to three levels of competition – Local, Regional, and National Finals. The program is free, but please register.

Tri Your Luck Participants, 12+ years, can Tri Your Luck at an indoor triathlon on Saturday, March 11 at Lakeview Fitness. There are 2 heats, 12-15 years at 8 am, and 16+ years at 9:30 am. The swim portion will be completed in the 25 yard pool, biking will be on Precore Indoor Bikes, and the run will be completed on treadmills. Each leg will be for time, rather than distance, and every finisher will receive a one of a kind medal. Participants will be awarded points based on achievements. Top finisher for each age group will receive a prize. Register by February 25 for a $5 Early Bird discount!

Black and White Photography & the Digital Camera This course for adults introduces the art of black and white digital photography. Class is held on Tuesdays, March 7-21, from 6-8 pm at the Sullivan Community Center. Topics include emphasizing the use of exposure in black and white, improving composition skills, seeing the world in greyscale, and the use of textures and lighting. Fee: $110

 

Adult Softball Leagues Open Registration begins March 20 and information packets are available for pick-up at the Sullivan Community Center. Leagues are offered for Co-rec, women, and men. Twenty player maximum is allowed per team. League play is from May to mid-August. Games are played at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex in the evenings. Nature Explorers Children, 3-5 years, love to learn about the world around them. How tall are the trees? How wild are the animals? How deep is the ocean? Through discussion, crafts, and activities we will learn the answers to these and many more questions. Nature Explorers class is held on Tuesdays, March 14-May 9 from 11:45-2:30 pm at the Sullivan Community Center. R/NR Fee: $195/215

 

Battle Bots Workshop Boys and girls, 7-13 years, will build their own battle bots in this workshop on Saturday, March 4 from 10am-12pm at the Sullivan Community Center! Students will build a robot, then challenge their creation against other robots. Our lesson plans are built around RoboThink’s exclusive kits and STEM curriculum, designed by teachers and engineers. The activities are interactive, hands on and engaging to promote learning in a fun way. R/NR $35/44

 

Engineer Self Driving Cars Boys and girls, 7-13 years, will learn about gear ratios, sensors, axles, wheels and motors as they build smart cars, modern day autonomous vehicles, rubber band racers and more! Classes are held on Tuesdays, March 21-April 25 from 4-5:30 pm at the Sullivan Community Center. R/NR $171/214

 

Swim Lessons Spring Registration begins March 7 for Vernon Hills’ residents and March 14 for non-residents. Swim lessons are offered for Parent/Tot, Preschool, and school age children. Lessons are held at Lakeview Fitness on T/TH or Saturdays. Adult, Private and semi-private lessons are also offered. Refer to the website or Winter/Spring Program Guide.

 

Creative Movement | Non-Recital Children, 2-3 years, are introduced to basic dance and creative movement through imaginative games, songs, music and rhythmical patterns. Coordination, motor skills, flexibility and confidence are developed at this stage of dancing. A parent or caregiver actively participates alongside the child. Classes are held on Saturdays, March 11-April 29 from 9-9:40 am at the Sullivan Community Center. R/NR $93/102

 

Triple Threat Junior Skills Training This clinic will separate kids, 5-7 years, into age and skill appropriate groups while working on ball handling, passing, shooting, lay-ups and defense. Class meets on Monday/Wednesday from 4:30-5:15 pm, March 6-22 at the Sullivan Community Center. Coaches will focus on teaching fundamental skills of the game while providing a fun and safe environment for players. Fee $99.
